studio update

After more than three decades navigating both artistic practice and living with MS, painter Janice Moore shares exciting developments from her Freeport studio, including recognition in Maine’s most prestigious contemporary art exhibition.

Moore is among 29 artists featured in the Center for Maine Contemporary Art’s 2025 Biennial, on view through Jan. 11 in Rockland. Curated by Grant Wahlquist, the exhibition explores themes of seafaring, interiors, landscapes and Maine’s enduring relationship with painting.

“I hope this note finds you well in these perplexing times,” Moore writes. “Recently, I made the decision to invest more time and resources into my creative practice.”

Her layered, quilt-like painting process has evolved alongside adaptive techniques developed as her hands “don’t always cooperate.” Moore’s work also appeared in The Union of Maine Visual Artists’ “Washed Away” exhibition at Portland Public Library’s Lewis Gallery this summer, curated by art writer Carl Little.

Upcoming exhibitions include Craignair Gallery’s “Landscapes of the Heart: from Abstraction to Verismo,” Nov. 18 to Dec. 31.

Moore serves on the board of UMVA, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. Learn more at theUMVA.org or follow her on Instagram for regular studio updates.
