INDIGO

Indigo Arts Alliance in Portland held its seventh annual Spring is in the AiR fundraiser earlier this month, using the occasion to announce new leadership and a new initiative supporting the organization’s artist residency programs.

The organization named Mia Bogyo as its new deputy director. Bogyo joins Indigo Arts Alliance after six years as director of education at the Center for Maine Contemporary Art, where she oversaw arts education programs serving visitors of all ages. She was awarded the Maine Art Education Association’s Award for Excellence in Art Advocacy in 2023. Four new board members will also join in May: Tim Dooley, Whitney Hess, Ruki Neuhold-Ravikumar and Michael Derek Thomas.

The evening also marked the launch of Indigo Experiences, a series of curated cultural events offering immersive access to Maine’s most remarkable cultural spaces, with proceeds directly supporting Indigo’s artist residency programs. Several experiences remain available for purchase through May 10. They include a journey to Little Cranberry Island (Islesford) to visit the Ashley Bryan Center, with a family-led walk-through of the Storyteller Pavilion and a hands-on workshop led by co-founder and artist director Daniel Minter; a curatorial tour of Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens led by Minter and the Indigo Arts Alliance team, highlighting four installations from the “Deconstructing the Boundaries” series; a behind-the-scenes guided tour of the Maine Maritime Museum’s exhibition “Re|Sounding”; an exclusive first look at the new Maine MILL museum, including a curatorial exhibition featuring Indigo Arts Alliance alumni artists; a curatorial walkthrough at the Farnsworth Art Museum of “Maine: A Force within American Art (1890–2026)” and the solo exhibition “Go Bang!” by Benjamin Spalding, led by executive director Jordia Benjamin and studio and programs manager Ashley Page; and a private tour of the Portland Museum of Art and its upcoming special exhibition “Winslow Homer: Painter, Etcher” (on view July 3 through Oct. 18) with executive director Mark Bessire.

Indigo Arts Alliance builds global connections by bringing together Black and Brown artists from diverse backgrounds to engage in their creative practice and to shape what the arts can be in Maine and beyond. For more information or to purchase an Indigo Experience, visit indigoartsalliance.me.
