LOCAL Silk Improv Dupioni Silk
“Silk Improv #1” by Amy Nichols.

Local Color Gallery in Belfast welcomes guest artist Amy Nichols from May 19 through June 21. Nichols will speak about her art quilts at the May Art Walk reception on May 22 from 4 to 7 p.m., with her talk beginning at 5 p.m.

Nichols’ art quilts have grown out of a lifelong love of color, shape, design and texture. Among her earliest influences was wandering among colorful fabrics and textiles in the bazaars of Kabul, Afghanistan, as a child. Teaching elementary school students the principles of art and design was another formative experience, and she has drawn inspiration from artists including Mondrian, Klee, Matisse and Kandinsky. She describes herself as fascinated by the infinite possibilities for playful, intuitive expression with fabrics and textiles, guided by curiosity and an ongoing spirit of experimentation.

Largely self-directed in her practice, Nichols has taken many classes in art quilting techniques over the years and has actively participated in Art Quilts Maine, through which her quilts have been exhibited in the annual Maine State Quilt Show and in touring shows at libraries across the state. She has also collaborated with a neighbor and fellow art quilter on a show at the Bangor Public Library and four joint shows at the Belfast Free Library. She works from a studio in Belfast.
