Callas Open Studio ocean reach
Kimberly Callas, “Ocean Reach.”

Artist Kimberly Callas will open her Brooks studio to the public from 1 to 4 p.m. Aug. 8 at 29 Purple Heart Highway.

The open studio will feature works in progress from Callas’ “Ocean Entanglement” relief series, along with recent sculpture and process work. Through hand-sculpting, 3D printing and hand painting, the reliefs explore the body as a site where the ecological, psychological and symbolic intersect.

Callas’ practice integrates hand-sculpting with digital technologies, including 3D scanning, digital modeling and 3D printing, allowing forms to move between physical and virtual processes while retaining the presence of the hand. Visitors are invited to see new work in progress, learn more about the making behind the pieces and explore the ideas shaping this body of work.

Callas will share examples of the hybrid process she uses to make the reliefs, from hand-sculpted clay forms to 3D scans, digital sculpting, 3D printed forms, painted surfaces and final sculptural reliefs.

Rooted in ecopsychology and embodied ecology, Callas’ artwork explores the ecological self: the understanding that the human body is not separate from nature, but continuous with the more-than-human world. Through sculpture, relief and drawing, she investigates how bodies function as both medium and empath with nature, shaped by and responsive to the systems they inhabit.

Kimberly Callas’ open studio will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Aug. 8 at 29 Purple Heart Highway, Brooks. For more information, go to kimberlycallas.com.
