The Harlow invites artists to submit artwork to Art2022, the Harlow’s 27th annual juried show. Art2022 will be on view April 22 to May 28 at 100 Water St. in Hallowell. Art2022 is open to all Maine artists and to any artist with a strong connection to Maine. This year’s juror is Séan Alonzo Harris. The deadline for submissions is 11:59 p.m. April 1.

IMPORTANT DATES:

April 1: Complete entries due by 11:59 p.m. Entry email, images and fee must be received on or before this date. Incomplete submissions will not be considered.

April 7: Juror selects submissions for Art2022. Notification of juror results emailed to artists by this date.

April 9 and 10: Accepted artists drop off artwork at the Harlow, between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.

April 22 to May 28: Exhibition on view at the Harlow. Gallery hours are Thursday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

ABOUT THE JUROR: SÉAN ALONZO HARRIS

My photographic education began in my childhood and runs through the Art Institute of Boston, studies abroad in Italy and closer to home at Maine Media Workshops. I established my career in commercial, fine art and editorial photography in Maine, Boston and New York. I work with a broad range of editorial, educational and corporate clients including Mother Jones, Yankee Magazine, USA Today, LL Bean, Harvard Radcliffe Magazine, Atlantic Rethink, J.P. Morgan Chase and Cathay Pacific Airline. My professional practice includes teaching at Maine Media Workshops and collaborative, community-driven projects with nonprofit organizations. I have received multiple grants and awards from the Maine Arts Commission, a formal proclamation from the 121st Maine Legislature in recognition of my work and was named by Maine Magazine as one of the “60 Most Collectible Artists in Maine.”

My work is marked by a fine art sensibility and an emphasis on environmental portraits. My creative process draws from a wide range of photographic traditions and methods and is driven by an authentic connection to my subjects and my clients. I’m genuinely curious about peoples’ lives and the experiences that shape their world.  

RULES FOR ENTRY

Eligibility: Open to all Maine artists or artists with a strong connection to Maine. Original fine art in any media may be submitted, including hand pulled prints, photography, sculpture, and fine crafts, including ceramics, glass and fiber art. Jewelry, clothing, giclees and other reproductions are not eligible. Each artist may submit up to three works of art, which must be the artist’s own original work created within the last three years. Diptychs and triptychs are considered and judged as one entry. Any work that has been previously exhibited at the Harlow is not eligible. All works must be show-ready upon delivery to the Harlow. 

Original Art Only: Only original or originally printed works will be admitted; photocopies, color or computer generated copies are not acceptable for entry. Giclee reproductions are not eligible.

New Mediums: Contemporary work is welcome. If accepted artwork includes video, mechanic, or sonic elements, the artist must provide all necessary equipment for the full duration of the exhibition.

Size Limits: Two dimensional work may not exceed 6′ in length or width, including frame. Maximum frame size is 72” x 72”. Three dimensional work cannot exceed 8’ in height or weigh more than 150 lbs. Sculptural work must fit through a standard doorway. Pedestals with up to 15″ x 15″ display space are available, or the artist may supply their own. Please be aware that storage space is limited, and, after the exhibition, artists with large scale work must commit to retrieving it promptly.

Framing: All 2-dimensional entries, with the exception of oils and acrylics, must be framed with either glass or plexiglass. Unframed canvases are fine, as long as they are gallery wrapped (no staples visible). Frames and canvases must be wired and ready to hang (with two eye screws and steel wire). Sawtooth hangers, “clip” frames, or unstable frames will not be accepted.

Labeling Your Work: Artist’s full name, mailing address, phone number, title of the artwork, and price (or NFS) must be clearly printed on the back of 2D works and on the bottom of 3D works.

Entry fees: Non-refundable. Entitles you to submit up to 3 works of art. $25 for members, $30 for non-members.

Sales: The Harlow takes a 40% commission on sales for members and a 50% commission on sales for non-members. Please price your work accordingly. When you submit your entry, you are welcome to join the Harlow to qualify for the member’s commission. Work does not have to be for sale, and can instead be marked “NFS” (not for sale).

Our jurors are individuals of distinction and reputation from the Maine art world, who focus on putting together a cohesive and compelling show based on their own professional but subjective judgment. Only a portion of the work submitted will be included in the final exhibition. Juror decisions are final.
