The spring show at the Blue Hill Bay Gallery features three artists whose recent works depict birds that live in Maine.
Gelena Pavlenko trained at the Ukrainian Art Academy in Kyiv and is now based in New York City, where she lives with her husband and son. Her magical realism depicts birds as tiny jewels decorating the natural world of spring blossoms, exemplified in her work “Coming of Spring.”
William Marvin captures the natural beauty of Maine on canvas out in the open, fresh and unspoiled. His painting, focused on the majestic peregrine falcon nesting on the cliffs of Acadia, reveals a dynamic portrait of the bird with Sand Beach and Great Head in the distance.
Don Crosby Brown specializes in birds of Maine in the realist tradition. His work has been featured in National Audubon, the Smithsonian and American Museum of Natural History and on the cover of Down East.
The show also features several warblers from Audubon’s hand-colored lithographs in Havell’s “Birds of America,” printed in 1828, signed limited edition prints of bluebirds by Roger Bateman and LaFreniere’s photos of Maine Puffins.
The show is on view from May 1 to June 15 at the Blue Hill Bay Gallery on Main Street in Blue Hill. Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
