The August show at the Turtle Gallery features women artists of Maine.
The exhibition runs Aug. 3 to 27. An open house will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Aug. 4, when guests can enjoy conversation with and work by Alix Bacon, Holly Berry, Rebecca Goodale, Conny Hatch, Michele Ratté, Barbara Sullivan and others. Weather permitting, refreshments will be served in the garden.
Painter Alix Bacon returns to Deer Isle every year to paint her beloved Sand Beach and other island scenes. Holly Berry is an accomplished printmaker and children’s book illustrator who has lived and worked in Maine for decades. A Portland, Maine artist, Rebecca Goodale is noted throughout New England as a creator of unique and limited edition artist’s books, many with sculptural components. Maine found materials bring character and delight to Conny Hatch’s assemblages. Belfast-based Michele Ratté develops and combines techniques and materials for describing her fascination with marine environments. Barbara Sullivan lives, teaches and works in Maine in traditional ‘buon fresco’ to celebrate and satirize the monotony of everyday life.
As part of Turtle Gallery’s effort to give back to the community, a portion of profits will be donated to Island Workforce Housing, which is dedicated to creating affordable housing on Deer Isle.
The Turtle Gallery resides in an 1876 two-story barn and outdoor sculpture garden located at 61 N. Deer Isle Road in Deer Isle. Hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday through Sunday. For more information, visit turtlegallery.com, or call 207-348-9977.
