The Deer Isle Artists Association is pleased to announce that its March artist in residence will be Katy Helman. Helman is a graduate of the Massachusetts College of Art and a new member of the DIAA.
Helman primarily paints in oils but occasionally works in other media, such as prints, collage and embroidery. Her art is generally abstract and assimilates the varied influences in her life. As she put it, she has a “very busy head, and the natural environment provides a good balance to the chatter.”
Her website notes that for many years, she has been living and teaching in Deer Isle, where she “creates colorful, patterned paintings, often with collaged text or images which add dimension and context.”
Helman will begin her residency at the DIAA gallery on March 12. Visitors are welcome to observe her working at the DIAA gallery on Mondays from 1:30 to 5 p.m. and Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1 to 4 p.m. During her residency, Helman will be photographing some of her work, making slides for future paintings, and reproducing some of her drawings as embroidery. She welcomes visitors to bring their own projects to work on when visiting the gallery.
She will hold an exhibition of her work in progress from 5 to 7 p.m. March 29.
