Christopher Brumfield, who divides his time between Blue Hill, Maine and Baton Rouge, Louisiana, will be the Deer Isle Artists Association artist in residence for the month of April.
The residency will culminate in a gallery-wide installation and closing reception from 4 to 6 p.m. April 27.
Although a relatively new member of DIAA, having joined the organization two years ago, Brumfield states that he “has always been an artist.” For the past 30 years, his work has been concentrated on creating ceramics. He enjoys incorporating a wide variety of materials into his art, including clay, glass, wood, found objects and words. Brumfield’s work can be viewed at www.christophersblues.com.
While not directly integrated into his work, Brumfield finds “the staggering beauty here [in Maine] to be breathtaking.” His art is primarily influenced by his memories, and visitors to the gallery are welcome to discuss how these recollections unite with his materials to create unique pieces. During his residency at DIAA, Brumfield will be working on ceramics, bookmaking, poetry writing, gnome mold fabrication and other artistic flights of fancy, including a poetry illustration project with Louisiana artist and poet K. Malia Krolak.
Visitors are invited to the gallery to view his work as he hosts an open studio from noon to 4 p.m. Tuesdays through Thursdays throughout the month. On April 5, he will host a poetry writing workshop from 1 to 3 p.m. with Krolak, and at 4 p.m. April 19, Brumfield will offer a lecture on the history of garden gnomes at the Stonington Public Library.
