Julie H. Rose grew up in and around New York City; a “free-range kid” in a place with many of the greatest museums in the world. She was taken to many extraordinary openings and art events by her parents who owned a small gallery right outside the city. At the age of 15 she was taking life drawing classes at the School of Visual Arts where she received a scholarship and a BFA. She then worked as a food illustrator for such magazines as Gourmet. Julie moved to Maine 25 years ago originally to raise sheep and ended up working as a tattoo artist for 15 years. After closing her shop, she saw a documentary about chef Paul Liebrandt, “A Matter of Taste” which inspired her and made her see a connection to her love of fiber. In Liebrandt, she saw the attention to detail, focus, love of beauty and aesthetics that she so much admired. And so, an adventure began, and still continues, as she draws from an arsenal of historical fiber arts techniques, drawing and printmaking, to construct shadowboxes of natural seeming treasures, all made from organic materials, evocative of bird’s nests and skeletons, detritus at the water’s edge, moth’s wings and even Amuse Bouche.
