In 2010, the following article appeared in the Courier Gazette: “Midcoast artist Ronald Frontin is offering a program at Lincoln Street Center in Rockland. His vision is to teach a group of serious artists over long term study, beginning with basic drawing, leading to painting and eventually marketing their mature paintings. Beginning artists High School and up are welcome.”
The venue and the students have changed, but 14 years later, the class is thriving.
Frontin’s work will be on display, along with works by 20 of his students, at Mars Hall Gallery in a show titled “Frontin & Company,” which runs Aug. 14 to Oct. 14, with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m. Aug. 16.
In the main gallery, Mars Hall offers a group show by gallery artists. On display are watercolors by Leo Brooks, Nat Lewis, Cam Noel, Elaine Reed, Carl Sublett and Bill Thon; acrylics and oils by Jeannette Steel Esposito, Kris Johnson, Sharon Larkin, Maurice Michel Lode, Nancy Lee Lovely, Jimmy Reed, Manuel Rincon, Russell Smith, Carl Sublett, Ron Weaver, Georgia Zaychenko and James Zoller; mixed-media collage by Eleanor Zuccola; and a variety of 3D art by Ian Baird, Bill Cook, Bill Nichols and Rudy Rotter.
The back gallery features a one-woman memorial show by outsider artist Elaine Niemi. Her paintings depict her life in Maine, and her sculptures are made of found objects. Niemi showed in Maine and had an invitational show at the University of North Carolina.
Also available outside in the gardens are sculptures by Brian Read and inside quality crafts including decoupage by Davene Fahy and stained glass, pottery and mosaics by Dona Bergen.
Mars Hall Gallery is located at 621 Port Clyde Road (Rt. 131) in Martinsville. For more information, hours, or to make an appointment, call 207-372-9996. Learn more at marshallgallery.net or email marshallgallery@roadrunner.com.
