George Marshall Store Parts Wholes

George Marshall Store Gallery will open the exhibition “Parts & Wholes” with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m. Aug. 24. The group show is curated by Toby Gordon and presents the work of nine artists, each invited to create — within a contained space — a series of individual pieces that together form a complementary whole.

In an overwhelming world, the enclosed edges of a contained space offer a certain safety, a grounding within which we are free to explore, discover patterns and build connections. Using that idea as a springboard, each artist was tasked with creating a cohesive collection within a roughly five by six foot space. The resulting works both push against and fit within those boundaries, ranging from expansive, site specific installation to meticulously balanced grids. Each collection reflects a distinct voice, and encourages viewers to consider the role of interrelated pieces in a larger, dynamic whole.

George Marshall Store Gallery, located at 140 Lindsay Road, York, is a contemporary art space specializing in exhibitions of emerging and mid-career artists from Maine and New England. See www.georgemarshallstoregallery.com for more information.
