Waterfall Arts Annual Chalk Walk Festival

The streets of downtown Belfast and Heritage Park will come alive with color on Sept. 28 during the annual Belfast Chalk Walk, a free and family-friendly event that invites artists of all ages to transform the sidewalks into vibrant works of art.

From mid-morning until late afternoon, visitors can watch as artists create stunning chalk drawings on the pavement, culminating in a display of completed works by the end of the day. For those unable to attend during the event, the chalk art will remain on display until it’s washed away by the rain, offering a fleeting glimpse into the creativity of artists from near and far, novice and professionals alike.

In addition to watching the artists at work, everyone is invited to participate in the community-draw area, where they can add their own artistic touch to the event. This accessible and inclusive activity is perfect for families and individuals of all ages.

Visitors can also vote for Best in Show. The winner will receive a cash award of donations made during the event, with a minimum prize of $100.

Interested artists should reserve a 4′ x 4′ spot along the Harborwalk, downtown Belfast, or Steamboat Landing Park as soon as possible. Supplies, including chalk, rags, knee pads and water, will be provided. Advanced registration is required, and artists are asked to submit family-friendly designs for approval. Young artists under age 16 can reserve a 3′ x 3′ spot. Those who prefer to work without an audience may request a spot to complete their drawing the day before the event. Additionally, Waterfall Arts is seeking artists to create way-finding arrows on Sept. 27.

The Belfast Chalk Walk is free to the public, though donations are welcome to help cover the cost of supplies. Artists interested in participating can register by contacting chalkwalk@waterfallarts.org.
