Littlefield Gallery in inter harbor Artists’ Reception: August 6, 4-6 pm

From June 25-August 20th, Barbara J. Zucker and Mark Herrington celebrate the Acadia Centennial through Barbara’s brilliant seascapes and Mark’s stylized, abstract stone sculpture,. Barbara received her B.A. from Ursinus College in 1966, studied Fine Art at Beaver College (now Arcadia University) and at L’Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence, Italy. She apprenticed with painter Richard Callner in his studio for three years after graduating from Tyler School of Art with a M.Ed. in 1971.

Barbara’s award winning paintings have been exhibited in hundreds of solo, curated and juried exhibits over her long career. “All true art comes from a place deep within the artist. Art is not simply a mastery of materials and techniques, but an expression of the artist’s emotional and intellectual reactions to stimuli in the inner or outer world. Some of my early paintings were formed within the subconscious in the way that dreams are made. Most of my paintings are more consciously formed but still derive from a deep visceral and emotional reaction to an idea or place. For me, painting is like keeping a journal, making visual the feelings and experiences that have occurred over a lifetime of work. It is an act of discovery of myself and the outer world.”-BJZ

“As a granite sculptor, everything I work with is a gift of geological time.” Mark is lifelong student of the creative process, and loves introducing new artists to granite sculpting as much as he loves practicing his own work. He is a self-taught stone artist: He has been a guest lecture at the University of Orono, being the first artist-in-residence in the Littlefield Gallery Artist-in-Residence program. The sculpture he created, “Tec.ton.ic,” is installed on the UMaine campus. A second sculpture, “Inanna,” is installed at the Buchanan Alumni House.

Mark has had many group and solo shows, and his public sculptures are installed permanently in diverse locations, including the International Sculpture Trail that links Schoodic’s symposium with Saint John, N.B.’s. “It might surprise people to know that I began my artistic life making guitars,” says Mark. As a granite sculptor, everything I work with is a gift of geological time.”
