The “Women Rising” art show at Markings Gallery honors the creativity and resilience of female artists, both past and present. Featuring the latest collection by fiber artist and shamanic practitioner Sara Palumbo, the exhibit blends contemporary artistic voices with the enduring power of mythic goddesses, illustrating how art connects us to our past, challenges our present, and inspires our future.
Palumbo, known for her intricate felted work, lives and works in the Portland area. Originally from New York City, she moved to Maine in 2015, embracing a creative path influenced by shamanic journeys, meditations, personal narratives, and the natural world. Her work is deeply personal, shaped by ancestral traditions and the landscapes around her.
Working in the abstract, Palumbo deconstructs concepts to their core, shaping wool and embellishments into expressive forms. “Felting is a magical mix of sculpture and sewing,” she explains. “When my hands mold wet wool into felt, it’s a heart-energy transfer — stories emerging through my hands into the fibers. Once a piece is complete, it takes on a life of its own, offering each viewer a unique experience.”
“Women Rising,” currently on display at Markings Gallery, pays tribute to influential female artists like Frida Kahlo and Georgia O’Keeffe, as well as Celtic goddesses such as Elen of the Ways and Corra. Sara’s work reflects her deep respect for the lineage of makers in her family — bakers, cooks, seamstresses, quilters and knitters — women whose creativity was expressed through their hands.
The exhibit features felted wall hangings inspired by both artistic and mythic female figures. Each piece tells a unique story, reinterpreting ancient symbols and legendary figures through a modern, abstract lens.
Markings Gallery invites visitors to experience Palumbo’s collection alongside works by other talented female artists.
