“On This Ground,” co-curated by Cynthia Winings and Jenny Brillhart, brings together artists Moira Holohan, Bob Hiemstra, David Wilson and Jenny Brillhart, whose work explores the idea of a base or ground — whether in landscape, the floors we walk on, flowers emerging or the painter’s underlayer. The show is on view at Cynthia Winings Gallery in Blue Hill.
Their visual language, shaped by observation, memory and material surfaces, echoes the tactile presence of earth and floor, inside and out. The title points to both literal and conceptual ground: the raw matter artists draw from and the compositional foundations of pigment, surface and narrative. These works invite meditations on mortality, place and beauty. Painterly textures, woven surfaces and bold contrasts reveal perspectives that are at once ephemeral and deeply rooted.
The opening reception was held on Aug. 24 and included Sculpture in the Garden by Marylou Reid, Melita Westerlund, John Wilkinson and LUNAFORM.

In the Project Space, the gallery presents Kathy Hodge’s “Complex World.” In this series of oil paintings, Hodge explores the meeting of organic and abstract forms in the untamed corners of New England. Tangled vines, branches and winter trees mirror the chaos of our times, yet within them she searches for hidden patterns that suggest order, peace and balance. As climate change and development threaten this fragile harmony, her work calls us to protect the natural world we share. “Complex World” will be on view through Sept. 13.
New artworks will also be on view from Louise Bourne, Emily Hopkins, David Hornung, M P Landis, Christine Lafuente, Diane Bowie Zaitlin, Cynthia Winings and more. Everyone is welcome.
Cynthia Winings Gallery is at 24 Parker Point Road, Blue Hill. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday, 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday and by appointment. Learn more at www.cynthiawiningsgallery.com, or call 917-204-4001.
