Monhegan
“Mohegan – 15” by Barbara Putnam.

Since 2021, Barbara Putnam has worked on a project studying the decline of the white spruce on Monhegan Island. Working with Bowdoin biologist Barry Logan, she has made 15 (and counting) images of dwarf mistletoe, a parasitic plant that alters the growth and life span of the white spruce, a tree synonymous with the Maine landscape.

Woodcuts in this series are printed on hand made papers from Japan and Thailand, reminding us to honor the tree as a great resource for all manner of communication. Four images were in included in the exhibition and book “Art, Ecology, And the Resilience of a Maine Island. “

The Monhegan series is part of the Turtle Gallery’s final show of the season. The exhibition will feature artist books by Rebecca Goodale, prints and paintings by Holly Berry, Sheep Jones, Paul Trowbridge, Elena Kubler, Nicole Herz, Vaino Kola, and mixed media work by Conny Hatch, Michèle Ratté, Lynn Duryea and Sharon Townshend. The show will be on display until Oct. 12.
