“Displacement: Immigrant Portraits” arrives at the Rockport Public Library, 1 Limerock St., Rockport, from March 4 to 28, bringing a timely and quietly forceful body of watercolor work by Jean Kigel into a public civic space. Kigel’s portraits depict immigrants from India, China, Gaza, Ukraine, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Venezuela, Mexico and Latin America, focusing on individuals whose labor and expertise have shaped the nation’s farming, health care and scientific wellbeing.

The exhibition’s stop follows a period of intensified immigration enforcement in the state, including Homeland Security operations bluntly branded “Operation Catch of the Day,” which led to more than 200 arrests in January. National rhetoric has further inflamed the climate, with Donald Trump describing thousands of people arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in Minnesota as “hardened, vicious, horrible criminals” while labeling anti-ICE demonstrators as “paid insurrectionists.”

One of the exhibition’s central works, “DIgital Nomad,” portrays an immigrant from India and gestures toward the scale and complexity of contemporary migration. More than 5.1 million Indian Americans currently live in the United States, and Silicon Valley tech companies employ roughly 65,000 workers on H1B visas, with people from India representing the largest share, about 515,000 in 2025. That same year, the U.S. government revoked visas and green cards from more than 15,000 Indians, many of whom were deported under conditions that included handcuffs, ankle chains and transport on U.S. military planes during 18-hour flights back to India. Each portrait in “Displacement: Immigrant Portraits” is accompanied by researched commentary that situates the individual image within broader immigration histories and current policy realities, encouraging viewers to move beyond abstraction and statistics toward human presence and lived experience.

The Rockport Public Library is open Monday through Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., except Wednesday when hours extend from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. The library is closed on Sunday.
