Nicoletta Siccone, artist and art educator, will serve as the March Artist-in-Residence at the Deer Isle Artists Association. Siccone is a multifaceted artist whose work spans painting, sculpture, jewelry and glass, and she regularly exhibits her zipper jewelry, gyotaku and sumi-e at the association’s gallery.
During her residency, Siccone will explore color through the creation of natural pigment inks for art and calligraphy, an approach she views as a natural extension of her sumi-e practice of grinding inksticks on stone. Using materials collected around the Deer Isle peninsula and beyond, she will investigate how the ink-making process can inform and inspire a new body of work.
The gallery will be open to the public Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and visitors are encouraged to stop in whenever the OPEN flag is flying.
As part of the residency, Siccone will host a free community workshop, Bottle Your Own Ink, from 2 to 4 p.m. March 13. Open to all ages, the workshop invites participants to imagine bottling the colors of Maine by using foraged natural materials to create their own ink to take home. All materials are provided, and participants are encouraged to dress to get messy. Space is limited, and advance registration is requested by March 10 via email at artologie.ncs@gmail.com.
The residency will conclude with a closing reception from 2 to 4 p.m. March 27, when Siccone will display her work and share reflections on her time at the association. All are welcome to attend. Additional updates on her work and information about summer art classes at the Art Garage in Stonington are available through her Instagram account, @artgaragemaine. The Deer Isle Artists Association gallery is located at 15 Main Street in Deer Isle Village.
