Landing Gallery in Rockland opens its 2026 season with “The Quiet Light of Maine,” a solo exhibition of new paintings by Lisa Kyle, on view May 1 through May 31. Kyle’s opening reception will be held during the First Friday Art Walk on May 1 from 4 to 8 p.m.
The paintings depict moments of serenity in the natural world, focusing on those hushed intervals when land, water and sky seem to rest together. Set among the open waters, wide skies and quiet meadows of Maine, the works invite viewers into scenes where time slows and attention deepens. Most are inspired by the landscapes of Maine’s Midcoast region, as well as the distinctive environments of Vinalhaven and Jonesport.
Referencing John Muir’s well-known observation that “everybody needs beauty as well as bread, places to play in and pray in, where Nature may heal and cheer and give strength to body and soul alike,” Kyle describes her intention to evoke the restorative quality of being in these places rather than merely describing them — capturing the gentle presence of light, the subtle shifts of color across meadow grasses and the expansive views over water that define so much of Maine’s landscape.
Kyle paints in the tradition of the Impressionists, with a focus on the effects of light in the landscape. Her formal education is in architecture — she holds a BA in environmental design and an MA in architecture — which gives her work a strong underlying sense of composition. She has studied painting at Southern Methodist University, the Savannah College of Art & Design and the Maryland Institute College of Art, and has participated in numerous workshops with established artists.
The gallery’s 2026 season continues with “Fire and Ice,” new paintings by Sarah Faragher, June 5 through June 28; “Sense of Place,” new works by Russell Slocum, Liz Prescott, Christopher French, Michael Weymouth, Roberta Baumann and Bruce Busko, July 3 through Aug. 2; and “Just Passing Through,” a solo exhibition of new paintings by Prescott, Aug. 7 through Sept. 20. The season closes with a holiday exhibition and opening reception with gallery artists on Nov. 6 from 5 to 8 p.m., running through Dec. 19. First Friday Art Walks are held every month from May through November, 4 to 7 p.m.
