KIGEL
“Blue Oil Can” by Jean Kigel.

Jean Kigel Studio + Gallery in Waldoboro is showing “Artifacts” this month, a collection of watercolors and oils depicting everyday tools and household objects — machining tools, drills, sad irons, rolling pins and bean pots, many from Kigel’s own family.

The featured work is “Blue Oil Can,” a 1930s garage item that, like the other objects in the show, has acquired the patina of daily use. “I love its dents, rust, and worn paint,” Kigel said. “It reminds us that well-made and well-cared-for tools and household items can last for decades. It symbolizes an alternative to our throw-away way of life.”

Born and raised in Maine, Kigel specializes in Asian brush painting, watercolors and oils, and has traveled to Japan and China to pursue brush painting. Her work has been exhibited in SoHo, New York; Newburyport, Massachusetts; Amman, Jordan; and Paris, France, as well as throughout Maine. She is a member of the Sumi-e Society of America and the Union of Maine Visual Artists.

Jean Kigel Studio + Gallery and its seaside gardens are located at 1396 Back Cove Road in Waldoboro. The gallery is open daily with flexible hours; calling ahead is recommended. Call 207-832-5152 or visit jeankigel.com for more information.
