Wiscasset’s Sylvan Gallery celebrated its 25th anniversary during the Wiscasset Art Walk on June 25.
New works from all represented artists were on view, and gallery artists Roberta Goschke of Waldoboro and Erin Spencer of Rhode Island attended the art walk with their most recent paintings on display. Both artists also painted in Wiscasset earlier in the day in their plein air styles. Neil Lamb performed on guitar.
The event marked the beginning of a season-long celebration of Sylvan Gallery’s 25th anniversary, with additional artist receptions planned during the July and August art walks.

Sylvan Gallery was established in 2001 in Clinton, Connecticut. A dream was fulfilled when the owners, Ann Scanlan and her late husband, Rick Scanlan, relocated the gallery to Wiscasset in May 2012. An artist herself, Scanlan represents a diverse group of contemporary New England artists, many of whom have won national recognition. Works in oil, acrylic, watercolor and pastel are always on view.
While Maine’s coastline, villages and islands inspire many of the works on view, visitors will also discover European street scenes, rural landscapes, florals, still lifes and figurative paintings. Throughout the collection, artists explore light, atmosphere and mood through expressive brushwork that emphasizes feeling as much as detail.
“Twenty-five years ago I could never have imagined where this journey would lead,” Scanlan said. “I’m grateful to the artists, collectors, and community who have supported the gallery through the years, and excited to celebrate this milestone together.”
The exhibition features new works by the gallery’s roster of contemporary artists, including Joann Ballinger, Al Barker, Susannah Haney, Neal Hughes, Stan Moeller, Robert Noreika, Crista Pisano, Ann Scanlan, Polly Seip, Laura Winslow and Shirley Cean Youngs. Work from the estate of the late artist Charles Kolnik will also be on view.
Sylvan Gallery is at 49 Water St., Wiscasset, on the corner of Main Street, Route 1, and Water Street, next to Red’s Eats. The gallery is open 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday and Tuesday by chance or appointment.
