Dowling Walsh Gallery will host three exhibitions in September, featuring work by Greta Van Campen, Sebastian Blanck, and Scott Kelley.
Exhibits open Sept. 4 and will be on view through Sept. 26. The gallery will host an artist reception from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Sept. 4.
Greta Van Campen is a painter from Thomaston who’s known for her contemporary, hard-edged style. She comes from a family of artists and grew up painting beside her mother. Van Campen continued her studies in visual art at Bowdoin College and now lives in Thomaston. Van Campen has had solo exhibitions at Gallery BOM, Boston; Octavia Art Gallery, New Orleans, and Firecat Projects, Chicago, and has been included in group shows at Greenhut Gallery, Portland; ICON Contemporary Art, Brunswick; and Center for Maine Contemporary Art, Rockland, among others.
Sebastian Blanck was born in New Haven, Connecticut. He received his BFA in painting from Rhode Island School of Design. Documenting the small intimate moments in life, Blanck’s work is comprised of portraits of loved ones, fellow artists, and musicians, as well as his children at play. He uses a collage technique that layers painted paper over watercolor onto stretched paper. Blanck’s color and draftsmanship vibrantly capture personalities and moods to convey great familiarity with his subjects. Blanck currently lives and works in New York City. Blanck’s most recent exhibitions include “Dear,” Tayloe Piggott Gallery, Jackson, Wyoming; “Everyday” at De Buck Gallery, New York; and “Paper Trail,” Baldwin Gallery, Aspen, Colorado.
Scott Kelley’s exhibit, “Hold Fast,” has been on exhibit since Aug. 7 and will continue through Sept. 26. Kelley was born in Binghamton, New York, in 1963. He studied at The Cooper Union School of Art, New York; The Slade School of Art, London; and was a fellow at The Glassell School of Art, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. He had his first solo exhibition at the age of 18 with The American Realist Gallery in New York, and has had over 15 solo exhibitions since then. Kelley’s work is in numerous public and private collections, including the Portland Museum of Art and the Portland Public Library. He was awarded a fellowship to the Edward Albee Foundation in 1993. He also received a grant from the National Science Foundation Antarctic Artists and Writers Program, which sent him to Palmer Station, Antarctica, in 2003. Kelley lives and works on Peaks Island, Maine, with his wife, Gail, and their son, Abbott.
