Meetinghouse Arts Gallery presents “Second Lives: Art from Found Objects” from June 6 to 22, featuring works by Steve Bradford, Caroline de Mauriac and Kharris Brill.
These three assemblage artists share their distinctive approaches to creating works that combine salvaged materials and natural detritus, infusing them with reimagined purpose.
Creative workshops are offered each weekend as part of the exhibition. This hands-on workshop invites participants to see the unseen — using jeweler’s loupes to explore the hidden details of everyday objects, plants and artifacts. Through close observation, drawing and discussion, uncover the purpose and beauty in small structures. Participants will also explore the assemblage art on display, using a curated object hunt to sharpen their “see more” skills.
Steve Bradford
Descriptions of Steve Bradford’s work have ranged from “elegant and elegiac” to “pataphysical absurdity.” During a 20-year residency in Sacramento, CA and the years following his return to Maine, he has shown in multiple area galleries as well as Sacramento’s Crocker Art Museum, the New Bedford Art Museum and the Fuller Craft Museum in Brockton, where he participated in an assemblage show that subsequently traveled to museums in Ohio, Pennsylvania and California. His work can be seen at stevebradford.art.
Caroline de Mauriac
Caroline de Mauriac, an assemblage artist, photographer and aficionado of comparative mythology, draws heavily on the alchemy of human archetypes at the intersection of the inner life and outer experiences. Her work centers on narrative possibilities with each piece inviting the viewer to explore its content as potential source material for entering their own personal stories. Her work has been shown at Meetinghouse Arts, The Maine Gallery, The Yarmouth Art Festival, Munka Studio, The Crooker Gallery, and River Arts, as well as the Griffin Museum of Photography in Winchester.
Kharris Brill
Kharris creates a wide range of found object assemblage works, giving new life to materials like old maps, watch parts, driftwood, moss and camera lenses. Her work can be viewed online at www.kharrisb.com.
Since 2024, she has exhibited in solo shows at Meetinghouse Arts Gallery (April 2024), Craignair Inn Gallery (January 2025), and is currently featured in the River Room at River Arts Gallery. She has also participated in group exhibitions across Maine and New Hampshire, including at Meetinghouse Arts, Maine Art Gallery, River Arts Gallery, Waterfall Arts, Main Street Gallery, and The Art Center. Her work is on ongoing display at several galleries including Harvest Gold Gallery (Lovell), Craignair Inn Gallery (Spruce Head), Chocolate Church Art Center (Bath), and, as of May 2025, Maine Art Collective (Moulton St, Portland).
The gallery is located at 40 Maine St., Freeport. Throughout the exhibition’s run, the gallery will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday.
